I almost gave this blog passing marks,
until I reread it and wondered when calories had replaced
carbohydrates as a measure for determining the quantity of food we
eat.

Then I need to ask what are they basing
“consumed adequate quantities from the recommended food groups”
on in their statement.  We are all in trouble if it is the USDA Plate
model for nutrition.

store insulin is important.  Insulin should be stored in your
refrigerator.  Preferably you will have a shelf on which you store it

Even the Joslin Diabetes Center agrees
that insulin probably is not avoidable.  They lean heavily on the
statement that diabetes is a progressive disease.  I do agree with
their statement that the longer you have type 2 diabetes, the more
likely your pancreas will deteriorate and you will need to be on
insulin.  





This may happen even if you take
excellent care of yourself. This discussion is not to include the
major depressions, but realize they can happen.  Mild and short-term
depression is the most common for people with diabetes – about
double the risk, with approximately two-thirds of people with
diabetes at risk for depression.  For people with depression, the
risk for diabetes is about 20 percent.  





Several items came to light in my

In the last blog,
alternative treatments for diabetic neuropathy were mentioned.  Now
it is time to discuss the alternative treatments as some are quite
effective, but again it is worth pointing out that not everything
will work for everyone.




Capsaicin is the chemical that gives
hot peppers their bite. When applied to the skin, capsaicin creams

case you are not aware of this, diabetic neuropathy has no known
cure.  Treatment focuses on slowing the progression of the
disease, relieving the pain, and managing the complications. 





As
you should know, management of your blood glucose readings is
important.  Maintaining these in a narrow range is the best solution

Seeing
a doctor is very difficult for many people.  They do not like to
admit something is wrong that they cannot handle.  Others just will
not see a doctor until they have to.  Neuropathy is not something to

how to manage your diabetes helps prevent many of the complications
of neuropathy.  In other words, know how to tightly manage your blood

One
of the more problematic complications of diabetes is diabetic
neuropathy.  It is a type of nerve damage where high blood sugars can
damage the nerves most often in your feet and legs.  Diabetic
neuropathy can affect nerves in your entire body ranging from mild
problems to painful that can be disabling or fatal.




There
are four main types
of diabetic neuropathy. I have to end the week with this.  This study is about imposing a “Sugar Tax” on our sugar-sweetened
beverages.  This is proposed on the basis that it will cut into our
current obesity epidemic.  The proposal is for a one cent per ounce
tax.  Buy a 20-ounce bottle of your favorite sweetened beverage and
pay a tax of $0.20.  





Does this seem steep?  Not enough to

thought of “How can I be a better doctor?” really drew my
attention.  He then describes the 4 C’s, which he says he learned

I would like to meet and get to know in a doctor-patient

after a meal?  Many people do it at one hour and others do it at two
hours after eating.  In my reading and experiences, either may be
correct and either may be false.  It is for this reason I encourage
people to find their own post meal high point in blood glucose

Maybe someone has finally seen the
light in diabetes prevention.  This article in WebMD was published on
June 28, 2011, but I had missed it until the other day.  I hope this
gets better recognition and acceptance, as there is a huge cost
savings to be had if people with prediabetes can be educated and

Sleep Deprivation is touted in the

only that, but for doctors that report working too many hours are

to happening.  I have one doctor that seems to go on autopilot during
almost every visit.  I will be analyzing key words in the future to see what

It appears that even with the evidence
staring them in the face (from their own wheat bellies) registered
dietitians are not willing to eliminate wheat from their diet

Granted there are some terms that need better definition.  This doctor missed a golden opportunity to give a great answer instead of the partial answer.
The question is does prediabetes mean that diabetes will follow.  First, the answer that many people do not want to hear. It is not surprising that the American Diabetes Association is one of the offenders as is the American Heart Association.  Now they may have the actual numbers by organization, but we are only given a total – 52 percent or a majority had either open conflict of interest or hidden conflict of interest.
